Anxiety & Tension Headache
Release the head tension that anxiety creates — and calm the mind in the process.
The Anxiety-Headache Connection
Tension-type headaches are one of the most common physical manifestations of anxiety. When you're anxious, the muscles of the scalp, jaw, neck, and shoulders contract involuntarily — creating the characteristic band-like pressure around the head.
In TCM, anxiety-related headaches are primarily caused by liver qi stagnation transforming into liver fire, or by heart fire flaring upward. The treatment approach is to simultaneously release the physical tension and cool/c calm the source of the anxiety.
Relief Solutions
Acupressure Combo
Press these three points in sequence for tension headache relief:
- Yintang (between eyebrows) — 30 seconds
- Taiyang (temples) — 30 seconds
- GB20 (base of skull) — 30 seconds
This combination is the classic TCM treatment for liver-related tension headaches.
4-7-8 Breathing for Headache
The extended exhale of 4-7-8 breathing directly reduces the muscle tension driving the headache. Do 4 cycles, focusing on releasing jaw and forehead tension with each exhale.
Cold Compress + peppermint oil
Apply a cold washcloth to the forehead for 10 minutes. Add 1 drop peppermint essential oil (diluted) to the temples. Peppermint has been clinically shown to relieve tension headache as effectively as acetaminophen.
Chrysanthemum Tea
In TCM, chrysanthemum (Ju Hua) "disperses wind heat" and "calms the liver" — making it ideal for anxiety-driven headaches. Steep 1 tbsp dried chrysanthemum in hot water for 5 minutes. Drink 1-2 cups. (Avoid during pregnancy)
Prevention Habits
Screen height: Monitor should be at eye level. Looking down at phones creates neck tension that leads to headaches.
20-20-20 breaks: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to prevent eye strain.
Dehydration check: Chronic mild dehydration is a common overlooked cause of tension headaches. Drink 8+ glasses of water daily.
