Breath Counting

A Zen meditation technique that combines breath awareness with focused attention.

What is Breath Counting?

Breath counting is a classic Zen meditation technique. Instead of trying to empty your mind, you give it a simple task: count your breaths. This anchors attention, prevents mind-wandering, and creates focus — all without effort or struggle.

The goal is to reach 10 without losing count. When you lose count, you start over at 1. This isn't failure — it's the practice. Losing count is your mind telling you it wandered, and the act of noticing and returning is the mindfulness.

The Technique

  1. 1

Sit comfortably with a straight spine. Hands rest in your lap. Eyes closed.

  2. 2

Begin natural breathing. You don't control the breath — just observe.

  3. 3

Count each exhale: Inhale... exhale, count "one". Inhale... exhale, count "two". Continue up to "ten".

  4. 4

When you reach 10, start again at 1. If you lose count, simply start again at 1. No frustration — this is the practice.

  5. 5

Practice for 5-15 minutes. At first, reaching 10 even once is good. Over time, you'll find yourself naturally reaching 10, then 20.

Why It Works

The counting gives your analytical mind something to do, which reduces anxiety-driven rumination. The limited range (1-10) creates achievable milestones — each completion is a small win. The instruction to "start over at 1" removes the pressure of perfection and cultivates self-compassion.
