Burnout & Chronic Exhaustion

When stress has accumulated so long your body and mind have simply had enough.

Understanding the Problem

Burnout in TCM is kidney and adrenal qi depletion — you've been running on willpower so long you've emptied your reserve. The spleen is also exhausted from overthinking, and liver qi stagnation from chronic stress creates physical tightness and irritability. Recovery requires rest, rebuilding, and boundaries — not more willpower.

Signs You Might Be Experiencing This

Bone-deep exhaustion

Tiredness that sleep doesn't fix, even after a full night's rest

Cynicism and detachment

Feeling numb, distant, or ironic toward your job and life

Reduced performance

Brain fog, missed deadlines, can't care about quality anymore

Emotional instability

Irritable, tearful, overwhelmed by small things

Physical symptoms

Frequent colds, headaches, muscle aches, gut issues

Dreading the future

Sunday scaries every day, not just on Sundays

Loss of meaning

Work feels pointless, even tasks that used to feel meaningful

Solutions That Actually Help

Adrenal Rest Protocol

Your adrenal glands are depleted. You need actual rest: 8+ hours sleep, no work on weekends, and at least one full day of 'nothing productive' per week. This isn't lazy — it's rehabilitation. Try: yin yoga, baths, music, nature walks, anything that isn't screens or obligations.

Blood Sugar Stability

Burnout brains are metabolically unstable. Eat protein and healthy fats at every meal — eggs, fish, nuts, avocado. Don't skip breakfast. Skip sugar and caffeine binges that create crashes. Stable blood sugar = stable mood and energy throughout the day.

Set One Non-Negotiable Boundary

Burnout comes from giving more than you have. Identify ONE boundary this week: no emails after 6pm, one weekend day completely off, or saying 'no' to one additional responsibility. Protect your remaining energy like it's the last you have.

Therapy or Coaching — You Need a Witness

You can't process your way out of burnout alone. A therapist or coach gives you a space to unload the weight you've been carrying. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for burnout. Look for someone who specializes in work-related stress.

When to Seek Help

If these feelings persist for more than 2 weeks and significantly impact your daily life, work, or relationships, consider speaking with a mental health professional. What you're experiencing is real, valid, and treatable. These practices complement professional care.
