Energizing Breath (Bhastrika)

The yoga "bellows breath" to increase energy, clarity, and mental alertness.

What is Bhastrika?

Bhastrika, meaning "bellows" in Sanskrit, is a powerful yoga pranayama technique. Like a blacksmith's bellows pumping air into a fire, bhastrika uses forceful, rapid diaphragmatic breaths to dramatically increase oxygen intake, stimulate the nervous system, and generate physical and mental energy.

Unlike calming breathing techniques (which reduce anxiety by slowing the nervous system), bhastrika energizes. It's ideal when anxiety manifests as low energy, brain fog, or lethargy — or when you need a natural energy boost without caffeine.

Important Caution

Skip this technique if you have: high blood pressure, heart conditions, glaucoma, vertigo, or are pregnant. Start gently — 10 breaths maximum. If you feel dizzy, stop immediately and return to normal breathing.

How to Practice

  1. 1

Sit with spine straight. Hands rest on knees. Take a normal breath to begin.

  2. 2

Exhale completely through your nose, emptying your lungs fully.

  3. 3

Inhale forcefully through both nostrils — your belly pumps out, chest expands. Not shallow — use your diaphragm fully.

  4. 4

Exhale forcefully through both nostrils — belly pumps in. This is one breath cycle.

  5. 5

Rapid pace: About 1 breath per second. Do 10-20 breaths to start.

  6. 6

After last exhale, take one deep slow breath in, hold 5 seconds, exhale slowly. Notice the energized feeling.
