Health Anxiety
When normal sensations become terrifying — and every headache is a brain tumor.
Important Distinction
Health anxiety (hypochondria) is a recognized anxiety disorder. It causes real distress. The techniques below are for managing the anxiety — if health anxiety significantly disrupts your life, please consult a mental health professional. And if you have physical symptoms that concern you, see your doctor first.
How Health Anxiety Works
Health anxiety creates a vicious loop: normal body sensations (heartbeat, slight headache, muscle twitch) are interpreted as signs of serious illness. This interpretation triggers anxiety, which creates more physical sensations — which are then interpreted as confirming the feared illness. The more you scan your body for symptoms, the more symptoms you find.
The key is interoception — your awareness of internal body sensations. Anxiety makes you hyperaware of normal sensations that most people ignore. The treatment is not to stop noticing your body — it's to change your relationship with those sensations.
Solutions
Stop Symptom Googling
The single most important step: no more googling symptoms. Google matches symptoms to catastrophic diagnoses, not common benign causes. If you have a physical concern, see a doctor — then accept their assessment and stop researching.
The 48-Hour Rule
When a new symptom appears, tell yourself: "I'll check if it's still there in 48 hours." Most symptoms that aren't serious disappear within 48 hours. If you still notice it after 48 hours, schedule a doctor's appointment. In the meantime, no googling, no checking obsessively.
Cognitive Distancing
When you notice a symptom, practice saying: "I'm having the sensation of [X]. This is an anxiety symptom, not a disease." The sensation is real — but the interpretation (disease) is anxiety talking. Create distance between sensation and story.
4-7-8 Breathing for Panic
When health anxiety spirals into panic, 4-7-8 breathing is your emergency brake. The extended exhale activates the parasympathetic system and interrupts the anxiety cascade. Even 2 cycles provide measurable relief.
